Chapter Twenty-Two

T he temperature has dropped a couple degrees since five o’clock that evening. During the autumn season in late October and early November it can get as low as below zero. Roc situation is a lot different. Roc wakes up with uncontrollable shivers that make him feel like he’s a heroin addict withdrawals. He can’t remember the last time her ate or how much time has passed since he lost consciousness. Far as he knows he lost track of time and didn’t like it. He lay his head back down on the hard cold concrete floor. It’s so dark he thought he was seeing white spots appear before fading into the pitch black room. Was he going to die? That was all he can think about.

Flashes of his childhood from years back came to life right before his eyes. Their father was playing chase freeze tag, illustrating animated cartoon characters as he tagged him. Those were the good ol days. He smiles to himself.

Before long reality sit in the bottom of his stomach he knew he wouldn’t make it out of where he was if he didn’t do something. What he had witnessed has never sat well with him for years. All he ever wanted to do was live a normal life without having to worry about the same struggles he was fighting so hard to avoid living. He always dreamed of having a family of his own someday. He yearned to be a father to his son and spoiling his daughter the same. Until now those were only dreams that seem so far away in a fantasy world.

Ever since his momma overdosed on cocaine back when he was fourteen he felt hopeless and alone. Mrs. Davis is the closest he ever had to a real mother. She provided for both James and himself no matter if she had to forfeit some of her own needs. She’s his guardian angel. There’s no telling where he would be in life if it wasn’t for her taking him in her home and cared for him. In his heart he never knew just how much he had grown to her. He could still remember the first time he had met Mrs. Davis. At the time he had run away from home. He was tired of seeing his momma killing herself over some glass pipe. James introduced him to his mother as his player brother. From that day on he was family.

Just thinking about his godmother brought tears to his eyes. They weren’t tears of sorrow or grief, but tears of motivation. Mrs. Davis always preached to James and him about never giving up or quitting on what you have your eyes set on. But to Roc’s benefit he realizes something in life is worth dying for. Roc tries to stand up feeling short pains travelling up and down his back as he realizes his hands are tied behind his back. Once he sees it’s useless to try to stand up on his own.
